Careers at Daily Watch Reports
Daily Watch Reports launched in 2026 with a clear purpose: to produce original, reliable journalism for a general audience, built around the values of accuracy, clarity, and independence. We are a small, focused team — and we take the work seriously.
What It’s Like to Work Here
We operate without the editorial interference that plagues too much digital media. There are no traffic quotas designed to push sensationalism, no pressure to chase trending nonsense at the expense of important stories. What we care about is whether a piece of journalism is true, well-reported, clearly written, and worth a reader’s time.
Being a small team means your work has real visibility and real impact. You are not one of fifty people working on the same beat. You will have the autonomy to develop story ideas, the space to write with a genuine voice, and direct access to senior editors who are invested in your development.
We are a remote-first organisation. Our contributors and staff work from wherever they do their best work. We use asynchronous communication as much as possible, and we respect that good journalism requires sustained, uninterrupted concentration.
Who We Are Looking For
We welcome applications from journalists and editors at any stage of their careers, as well as from talented writers who are making a transition into journalism. The qualities we look for are consistent regardless of experience level:
- Accuracy above speed: You check facts. You know the difference between a source and a claim. You are honest about what you do not know.
- Clear writing: You can explain complex events in plain English without dumbing them down. You understand that good prose serves the reader, not the writer.
- News judgement: You have a sense of what matters and why. You can identify a story that deserves attention, not just one that is easy to write.
- Source-building: You invest in relationships over time. You are comfortable making calls, knocking on doors, and following up persistently but respectfully.
- Digital fluency: You are comfortable publishing in a CMS, understand the basics of SEO as it applies to journalism, and can produce web-ready copy without hand-holding.
- Editorial judgment about images and media: You understand rights clearance, attribution, and why these things matter.
We publish across several beats including general news, politics, technology, culture, and current affairs. We are particularly interested in writers with deep expertise in a specific field alongside strong general reporting instincts.
Freelance and Staff Roles
We hire both on a freelance basis and, when the right candidate appears, on staff. Freelancers are paid per piece at rates that reflect the work involved — we do not ask for speculative work without a commissioning conversation. Staff roles come with a negotiated salary, clearly defined responsibilities, and editorial support.
We do not require exclusivity from freelancers. We do expect the same commitment to accuracy and editorial standards whether you write one piece for us or a hundred.
How to Apply
Send a brief introduction, three recent clips (or your best three pieces if you are newer to journalism), and a note about the kind of stories you want to cover to:
There is no set application form. We prefer a short, direct email over a lengthy covering letter. Tell us who you are, what you have done, and what you want to do next. If your clips are behind a paywall, please include the text of at least one piece in your email.
We review applications on a rolling basis and will respond when we have a relevant opportunity. We may not be able to provide individual feedback on every application, but we read every submission carefully.
Equal Opportunities
Daily Watch Reports is committed to building a team that reflects the diversity of the world we cover. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, colour, national origin, religion, sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, age, disability, veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law. We actively encourage applications from people who are underrepresented in journalism.
If you require any adjustments to the application process due to a disability or other need, please let us know in your initial email and we will do our best to accommodate you.
