The Last Kingdom

The Last Kingdom is a tv series about the story of Uhtred, a Saxon nobleman who was captured by Northmen and raised as one of their own. The show takes place in England during the time when Alfred the Great (King of Wessex) defended his kingdom against Danish Viking invasions. The Last Kingdom is based on Bernard Cornwell’s series “The Warlord Chronicles”. The first season premiered on BBC America on October 10th, 2015 with 8 episodes.

Season 2 premiered on March 25th, 2017 and ended on April 29th with 8 episodes. Season 3 will premiere sometime in 2018!

Season 1:

The first season of The Kingdom starts with Uhtred being captured and taken in by the Danes. He is then caught up on his past, how he was born an English nobleman but raised a Dane as one of their own (despite not wanting to be).

The series continues when Alfred becomes king after defeating the Norse King Guthrum at Edington.

Uhtred finally leaves Wessex because he wants more than just living a live for land or riches. His new goal is revenge against Kjartan who killed his adoptive father Ragnar Lothbrok.

Season 2:

Season two has seen Uthred fighting alongside the Saxons, to help them defeat Ealdorman Aethelwold who turns out to be a traitor. The season ends with King Alfred marrying and murdering his wife Ealhswith to marry Aethelwulf’s daughter, Ælfgifu who Uthred had been in love with before she was married off.

Season 3:

Season three saw the return of Kjartan (Uhtred’s enemy). After he turns up alive from the battle at Gillingham where Ragnar Lothbrok died. In this episode we also see; Thored rescues his sister Thyra from slavery. By killing her Danish lord Jarl Haraldson; but not without being captured himself and taken as their slave instead for revenge against him later on!

This series is based on Bernard Cornwell’s novel and the Danish television show “Riget.”

The first season was released in 2015, with a total of eight episodes.

The second season premiered in January 2017 with ten episodes.

In addition to UK viewers, BBC America has also broadcasted this TV Show across the United States since November 2016.

Season 6?

The final episode ended on an unexpected note. Because it was uncertain if The Last Kingdom would be renewed for Season six. However, fans can rejoice as it will continue with another instalment! With its popularity among both audiences abroad and at home; there are rumours that 11th Century England might be revisited in the BBC’s upcoming adaptation of The Warlord Chronicles.

Reviews and Ratings:

The first season has had a viewership of upwards of six million viewers per episode. And an 83% approval rating on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. The second series drew an average audience share for BBC America; at that time of 0.91% and a season-high share for any program in the network’s history; with an average audience share of one per cent, while its Rotten Tomatoes approval rating is currently 87%.

Conclusion:

The TV series will be on Season Six and it will not end with Season Five.

Amazon Prime Videos is also another option for more seasons of The Last Kingdom. But Netflix has yet to confirm anything about this show’s future; other than the first five episodes being released in 2019. They could still add new content in 2020 though!

83% approval rating by critics at Rotten Tomatoes; means that they liked what they saw from The Last Kingdom so far.
