The Last Kingdom, a BBC show, is an adaption of the Saxon Stories books by Bernard Cornwell. It follows Uhtred as he travels across England to reclaim his birthright from King Alfred and keep it out of Danish hands. The story tells of the brutal battles between Danes and Saxons in 8th-century England during what has become known as the Viking Age.

The cast is:

What are the reasons to watch The Last Kingdom?

The show is a close adaptation of Bernard Cornwell’s books. * many violent scenes will hold your attention for sure. *The cinematography and scenery in this BBC series are excellent, with gorgeous shots of medieval England captured beautifully by director Tom Harper (Peaky Blinders). It’s like watching an epic movie!

This historical fiction drama takes place at the end of Roman occupation in Britain and during what historians call “the Dark Ages” when there was no central government or king; it showcases aspects about the Anglo-Saxon culture you may not have known before. Do you want to know what everyone’s saying about The Last Kingdom before watching the show?

Reviewers have all had different opinions on whether or not this epic drama is worth your time. If I were in your shoes and wanted to decide if it was a good idea to tune into BBC America every Wednesday night at nine pm eastern standard time (EST) here are some reviews that may help you make up your mind! *This historical fiction drama takes place at the end of Roman occupation in Britain and during what historians call “the Dark Ages” when there was no central government or king; it showcases aspects about the Saxon invasion of Britain and the creation of one English nation.

Review:

“This is a drama with an epic sweep, well-paced for TV” but also goes on to say that it may not appeal to everyone because of its violence. some aspects unrealistic such as using Latin words in their dialogue, which was uncommon at the time…but overall thought it was worth watching if you’re into medieval dramas.

TIME Magazine commented about how historically accurate this show is (in regards to language) and praised BBC America for being able to produce another original series like Vikings!

Episode one of the first series is available to view online free via YouTube!

I’m looking forward to watching more episodes as they become available on British TV or streaming services like Amazon Prime Video and Netflix.

Lastly, I leave you with these final words: “What’s your favorite show?”

If The Walking Dead is too gory (or not appealing) for you then this historical fiction drama might be worth checking out -that is if you’re into medieval dramas. If so, don’t worry about those who say it doesn’t appeal because of its violence-it will still probably find an audience amongst medieval drama lovers.

The violence is a little too much for me, but it’s still an interesting storyline with some good production values. What do you think about violence? Does it bother you as well? Please let me know if there’s anything about the show -or cast- that I didn’t cover in my review! Comments are always appreciated and encouraged.

In conclusion:

I think most people would agree that this historical fiction drama deserves your attention.
