The History of  Doctor Who

The Doctor Who characters first appeared in the 1963 Doctor Who series, which ran until early 1969. The first actor to play the Doctor was William Hartnell, and he stayed for a total of 3 years as the character. Patrick Troughton took over in 1966, with Jon Pertwee taking over in 1970 after William Hartnell died. Tom Baker became the first incarnation of the popular character to stay on screen for more than one year (7 years) when he joined in 1974. The Doctor’s main companion was his granddaughter, Susan Foreman. When she left the show, she was replaced by a new companion who went by the name of Vicki.
