Star Trek (originally released as the short film Star Trek: The Motion Picture) premiered in Los Angeles on December 7, 1979. The film is set in the twenty-third century, when a mysterious and immensely powerful alien entity known as V’Ger approaches Earth, destroying everything in its path.

In the 23rd century, humanity is at war with a powerful alien race called the Klingons. The Enterprise, under the command of Captain James T. Kirk, is ordered to approach Earth to answer a distress signal from the Federation starship, USS Kelvin. It then destroys the attacking Enterprise, with a few survivors beaming aboard the alien craft. Among them is Captain Kirk’s former lover, Lt. Cmdr. Montgomery “Scotty” Scott, who was aboard Kelvin to oversee her refit. When he beamed aboard the alien ship, Scotty was transmuted into pure energy and then reconstituted as a human again.

Everyone, though young children and the elderly might not understand an adult-oriented science fiction adventure that is not really for kids, but has a great amount of action and adventure, with a lot of humor, a bit of romance, and some special effects. Star Trek is best watched by those that are mature enough to understand the show’s complexity, and have a good understanding of human nature as well as science fiction.
