The classic Doctor Who logo has been given a special anniversary makeover. In honour of this occasion, BBC Worldwide has released a new logo that is based on diamonds and looks especially regal. In addition to the new logo, the image of the Cloister Bell in use since 2010 has also been changed for this occasion. The BBC announced last summer that a brand new logo would be used for Doctor Who’s 60th anniversary in 2013. A source from within BBC Worldwide said: “The new logo represents both regeneration and a golden age. The diamond symbol was also used as a symbol on BBC America’s Doctor Who series until recently.

What is the story behind the Doctor Who logo?  

The classic Doctor Who logo was first used in 1963 and has been used on all subsequent versions of the show. The original logo was created by graphic designer Robert Banks Stewart, who also produced the iconic BBC red roundels that have been used on nearly every BBC logo since 1955. The original version of the Doctor Who logo had no colour, which was later added, along with a black outline, when it was decided to change the show’s theme tune from William Hartnell’s upper-class voice to Peter Davison’s more working-class voice.
