Sopranos

There is a brilliant show called The Sopranos, and it is one of the most popular pieces of television ever. It’s set in New Jersey and revolves around a character called Tony Soprano, who is the boss of an organized crime family. Tony has to balance his life as a mob boss with his life as a husband and father to three kids. In order to escape from his problems, he goes for therapy with Dr. Jennifer Melfi. The Sopranos is the most revealing portrait of the Mafia ever shown on television. It has very explicit language and violence, so it is not for everyone. When Tony is questioned about his methods of coping with stress, he replies, “I panic, then I bust caps.” It does not glorify the Mafia, but it does give an informative look into their culture.

The  concerned family talk

After killing an associate, Tony Soprano feels that he has finally become the man his father wanted to be. He has gained power and respect, but not without a price. His family sits at the table in the diner where Tony is sitting, they talk amongst themselves while Tony listens to them. When he hears that his father was put on trial for being a mob boss and that he died in prison, Tony’s world crumbles. As far as family is concerned, he has lost one of two parents that were left to him when his other parent went to prison.

Narcissism And The Mafia Culture

The healthiest part of Tony is the part that wants his wife and kids to be happy. He can’t realize how much he has hurt them because he is so self-absorbed. Tony is a narcissist, and a narcissist is someone who can’t feel bad for himself so he feels bad for the world. He does not care about other people’s feelings, and this has caused him to become involved in many corrupt activities. They think they deserve everything they have. Some of the major characters in The Sopranos all suffer from inner conflicts and psychological problems, but none of them are capable of having self-insight. This shows that the Mafia culture is toxic for people because it encourages narcissism. The Mafia culture is characterized by a lack of introspection and a lack of self-confidence.

The actual realization

This is why Tony was most happy when he was in therapy because he was at his most honest and most vulnerable. But the reason he learned these things was not that someone told him, it was because he found out on his own. He realized that he had caused a lot of pain to people around him, and that was hurtful for him as well. Any other man in his position would have continued on the path because he would not want the family to suffer. But Tony could be bothered by the suffering of others because he is a narcissist and feels bad for himself more than anything else.
