NBC Orders a Season of ‘The Irrational,’ Starring Jesse L. Martin

The Irrational

The Irrational, starring The Flash and Law & Order alum Jesse L. Martin as a behavioral scientist who helps solve high-stakes dilemmas, has been picked up by the network. NBC ordered a pilot for the series as part of its development for this season, and Martin was cast in April, but it’s unclear whether the show would debut in 2022-23 or be postponed until next season.

The series is inspired by Dan Ariely’s book Predictably Irrational, which dives into the myriad variables that shape how individuals think and make decisions. It is written by Arika Lisanne Mittman (La Brea, Timeless). Martin will play Alec Baker, a famous professor of behavioral science who brings his unique and unexpected method of understanding human behavior to a variety of high-stakes issues involving governments, law enforcement, and corporations.

Other cast members include Mahara Hill (OWN’s Delilah), Travina Springer (Ms. Marvel), Molly Kunz, and Arash DeMaxi.

The Irrational is produced by Universal Television. Mittman executive produces alongside Mark Goffman, Samuel Baum, and David Frankel. Martin will be a producer, and Ariely will be a consultant.

The Irrational is the third drama ordered by NBC from their 2022 development cycle, following Quantum Leap (which has been renewed for a second season) and Found (which begins in February).

Irrationalist

The term “irrationalist” is a broad one. It can be used to describe someone who lacks reason in their thoughts or ideas. Or, more exactly, it may refer to someone who openly opposes some aspect of rationalism, as defined in numerous ways. It can be viewed as either a negative or favorable trait, depending on how it is used: For example, some may regard religious faith as a virtue that does not need to be rational (see fideism), but others (even within the same religious tradition) may regard their faiths as rational, supporting rationalism.

Gambling or purchasing a lottery ticket may also be considered unreasonable if the expected value is negative.

In Europe, irrational thought was considered a resistance to Continental rationalism. Johann Georg Hamann, for example, is frequently labeled as an irrationalist.

The Irrational Reason for the occurrence

A man puts 21 black hats on a fire hydrant, which appears to be insane conduct.

Irrational conduct is studied in domains such as psychology, cognitive science, economics, game theory, and evolutionary psychology, as well as by practitioners of advertising and propaganda.

Irrational behavior theories include:

  • People’s true interests differ from what they imagine they want.
  • Mechanisms that evolved to provide optimal conduct in normal circumstances result in irrational behavior under abnormal circumstances. Reason for occurrence
  • A man puts 21 black hats on a fire hydrant, which appears to be insane conduct.
  • Irrational conduct is studied in domains such as psychology, cognitive science, economics, game theory, and evolutionary psychology, as well as by practitioners of advertising and propaganda.
  • Situations outside of one’s normal conditions in which one may experience significant levels of terror or revert to a fight-or-flight attitude.
  • People fail to see the irrationality of their behavior and assume they are acting entirely rationally, potentially due to faults in their reasoning.
  • Irrational actions are optimal, but they are made unconsciously based on “hidden” interests that are unknown to the conscious mind.
  • People are unable to comprehend the societal ramifications of their behavior, which may be attributed to a lack of empathy.
  • Some people end up in this situation by leading “dual” lives. They attempt to wear one “mask” for one set of people and another for another. Many will grow perplexed as to who they truly are or who they aspire to become.

The following factors influence rational behavior:

  • Stress, which can be emotional or physical,
  • The emergence of a novel or unusual circumstance
  • Intoxication
  • Peers who express irrational beliefs as necessary social approval criteria.

The Irrational Release.
