In the upcoming Luther: The Fallen Sun, the follow-up to the popular BBC One series Luther, Idris Elba will reprise his role as Detective John Luther. The movie will be released in Europe on March 2023. It is currently unknown when it will be shown in the US and Canada. The release date shifts by two months from where the BBC One series left off, which means Luther: The Fallen Sun will premiere after Luther Series 6 has aired for six months.

In August 2013, when the show’s creator Neil Cross stated he had developed a script for a prequel to the series, the idea of a movie adaptation for the BBC series was initially brought up.
Idris Elba said in July 2020 that there were no “formal plans” for a third season of the show but that he was eager to play the character again in a movie and that it was almost time. Elba will act with Cynthia Erivo and Andy Serkis in the movie, which will be released on Netflix in September 2021.
On November 10th, 2021, Elba made a filming announcement.
Both London and the Lite Studios in Brussels, Belgium, were used for filming.
