Immigrant nanny Aisha, piecing together a new life in New York City while caring for the child of an Upper East Side family, is forced to confront a concealed truth that no one else knows.Maria, who comes from a middle-class family in Ivory Coast, becomes a nanny for the daughter of Richard and Ellen Griffin, also of Ivory Coast. She soon befriends the seven-year-old and helps her learn English. Later, Maria meets James, a man from the country who she initially mistook for a child molester, but who actually saved her life after drug dealers attempted to kill him.

What is the plot of the movie?
Aisha has come to America with dreams of one day attending law school and becoming a lawyer. Becoming a nanny was not in her plans but with the help of the NANNY app, she was able to land this job. After being handed a list of “rules” by her new employer, Aisha is surprised to find out that she is not allowed to touch Amy, or even give her a hug. She’s also surprised to find that Amy has not been attending school, but instead spends all day locked in the house.
What makes this movie interesting?
This movie is scary and even has a few jump scares to keep you on edge. The guillotine scene will make your head spin and Amy’s evil laugh will make you want to cover your ears. This movie could also be a good family movie night movie. The only thing that is a little off-putting is that the kid, Amy, cuts herself and eats worms. This is never addressed in the movie or even hinted at.
What is the background of the movie?
The director, Nikyatu Jusu, was inspired by the nanny she hired to watch her son. She said “I thought, “I could tell a story about this woman I’ve come to know who is from the Ivory Coast and came over here to help.” When I met her on my block in Brooklyn I thought, ‘What if she were a good person and a bad person at the same time?’ The rest of the writing just fell into place.
Who can watch this movie?
Anyone can watch this movie. It’s a good thriller movie with a unique plot. You don’t see a lot of movies about immigrant nannies like this one. The language in the movie is not extremely explicit but does talk about objects accidentally hitting people and bleeding. I recommend 13+ to watch this movie with your child because of some iffy language used in the film.
What is the best part?
The best part of the movie is the ending. When you get to the end, you’ll want to scream “I knew it!” in an I-knew-it-all-along kind of way. The twist in this movie is amazing and I honestly didn’t see it coming.
