aftersun

An unexpected rare trip between father and daughter gives us a beautiful movie. “Aftersun” is the debut of Filmmaker Charlotte Wells  .

Watching “Aftersun” is an appreciable experience of cinema’s where we can enjoy the whole movie and not focus on small story development. Which produces a whole new sense for watching films that purely love the emotions of their audience.

The performance by Paul Mescal who plays Calum and Frankie Corio as Sophie is masterful because he portrays two characters so well who are defined completely by how they react to each other. The performance leads us to not being able to take our eyes from the screen even if there is only one more scene in this amazing movie!

What is the Exactly is “Aftersun” ?

The movie’s story starts as Calum (Paul Mescal) who is a divorced writer who decides he needs to have a change of scenery and moves to an island where his daughter (Frankie Corio) lives. He is being picked up by his daughter and driving around town, she tries to convince him not to stay but she has no choice. We are taken on that ride with them through the island’s town and its people.

The development of the characters is written in such a way that we start off understanding Calum , but then gradually come to understand Sophie better. The script does this very well in parallel scenes where Michael talks about his life and Sophie just observes through her actions.

What is the review of “Aftersun” ?

As a debut feature, “Aftersun” is very well done. It’s definitely a movie that will remain with you so you can think back on it and remember the experience. The movie is not predictable; it holds surprises to keep the audience involved with what might happen next.

The interactions between father and daughter are very realistic with a true feeling of maybe what has happened in your own family. It does not feel forced or over dramatic in any way, making it hard for the audience to take their eyes away from the screen!

The movie is very well shot, dressed, and scored. This makes it a movie that’s worth watching through and even re-watching. It has the ability to draw you in and make you want to know what will happen next.

A Short Summary

Aftersun” is not your average movie, it’ll keep you enthralled from start to finish. It leaves you with more than just a good feeling at the end of the movie because it’s deep, in your heart you want them to connect as father and daughter, not just for the sake of the film. And that kind of connection takes place in this movie!

The actors’ performances were very convincing. Many good things can be said about the way they portray their characters so flawlessly, but overall it was Mescal who had the best performance of the film as Calum . His skills really shine for this role making him believable as both a father and as Calum. His portrayal perfectly showed us that this man isn’t afraid to open up about his feelings to his daughter which we can so easily relate to.
