Strange World

Strange World is an animated film about prejudice in society. The film’s main character, Ethan, is a teenager who is openly gay. The character’s sexuality was not detailed in the marketing materials and was originally just a nod to the LGBT community. Disney is known for having many well-received films, but they have been criticized before for their lack of LGBT inclusion. Strange World is the first Disney movie to feature an openly gay character and it has received positive reactions.

Instances of homophobia in the story

“I don’t like the way he looks at me,” said a guy in line to see Strange World while talking to a friend. “What do you mean?” said his friend, “he doesn’t look at you in any way.” The guy continued, “it’s his eyes, I don’t trust him.” The girl in the same line overhearing the conversation asked what was wrong with Ethan’s eyes. The guy responded that he was gay. The girl said, “I don’t care” and laughed, “and I don’t mean to offend friend, but I don’t care either.
