Maid

Maid takes us into the hidden world of women like Gen, who must leave abusive relationships, often with their children, in order to survive. But just like the most vulnerable people in America are targeted by predatory lenders and charged exorbitant fees and interest rates on payday loans, they are also routinely cheated out of wages. Maid tells a deeply personal story that is also part of a much bigger picture Gen Zuk is a young Latina mother living in the suburbs with her 4-year-old daughter, Rosie. Gen works nights as a nurse’s assistant but longs to go back to school and have a better future.

Working for $10.00 per hour, Gen finds herself in a very vulnerable position. She is surrounded by men and must make the difficult decisions many women face: sleeping with her employer in order to get her daughter’s teeth fixed or skipping the dentist in order to pay the rent. Gen continues to work for several months as she tries to pay Rico back and support Rosie. But when Rico goes on a drug binge and becomes violent, Gen has no choice but to run for her life.

What does she want to do?

Gen yearns to be a mother, and a nurse and have a better life. She has four years at home with Rosie as a young girl to accomplish her dream. Until then she will do what she can to provide for Rosie and her family. In order for her to provide for her daughter and family she will do what it takes which includes working nights as a nurse’s aide.

What is the plot of the film?

It starts out with Gen washing dishes at Paulo’s restaurant on Christmas Day, waiting tables. As she serves a food order to Nick, Paulo informs her that the restaurant is closed for the holiday. When she confirms this information, he tells her that she has been fired for being pregnant and for taking a few days off due to the holiday. In shock, she asks for an explanation, but Paulo simply tells her that he doesn’t have to give her one. She then finds a number of jobs that she doesn’t want to do. They include babysitting, bathing the elderly, and working as a maid Gen is fired from another job in front of Paulo’s restaurant.
